First Post: PLEASE READ

January 17, 2008 · Leave a Comment

First post, and it’s difficult to resist the temptation to dive right in, but I figure I should lay down a few things concerning this blog before getting started.

This is something of an experiment. I don’t know how often it will be updated, or if I’ll keep up with it at all, but it’s worth a try.

This blog is going to be used to discuss issues that matter to me, in particular, feminism and how it relates to movies, television, music, literature, and various parts of day to day life .

Please note: I am a feminist NOT a misandrist (man-hater). Sexism is wrong regardless of who it is directed toward. I am strongly against sexism, racism, and various other -isms. This world could do with less hate. If you prefer the term, use “equalist.”

I occasionally struggle with the term “feminist” for a number of reasons. One being that I feel it is somewhat exclusive, placing the focus on “fem” and not taking into account that equality between the sexes is something which involves both sexes.

At the same time, I recognize that the focus is there for a reason. Women have been treated differently for a long time. The idea behind feminism is to improve the perceived status of females so that it is equal to that of men. Some people like to argue that in this day and age, in countries like the U.S, men and women are equal. I believe that these people are wrong. Just because not everyone is sexist, does not mean that no one is. Just because you would not treat another person as being “less than” based around their sex (or race, or gender identity, or…) does not mean that there aren’t people who do.

Issues of sexism and gender roles have an impact on both males and females. I am female, and so have had more experience with that aspect. However, I believe it is just as important to examine the effects of sexist ideas, misconceptions, and gender stereotypes on males as it is to examine the effects on females.

Simply put, this blog is about people, and how people are affected by certain things.

A lot of this will probably be done in the form of reviews. I will discuss movies, games, tv, books, etc. With any luck, I’ll get a few other people posting as well.

Please feel free to comment, to agree, disagree, qualify, whatever. However, if you are going to do so, please be respectful of the opinions and feelings of others. Nothing in this blog is intended to offend. It is intended to raise awareness, and to promote equality.

If you don’t view something in the same way as another person, at the very least take from it that someone else does view it that way. That matters.
